4.3.1. Risk associated to defined contribution pension funds
Defined contribution pension plans do not face significant risk in general, but certainly members expect that the fund tries to maximise the return so that they benefit from a replacement ratio at retirement as high as possible. Consequently the fund faces the risk of unhappy members if it not delivers reasonable performance. If members have the choice, the fund would loose members and finally the justification of existence.
Therefore it is in the Pension Funds interest to agree with the pension plan members and sponsors upon the level of reasonable performance in terms of an acceptable risk and chance profile and to adjust the investment portfolio accordingly.
